Evidence-based Navigation of Northern Medicine

In the spirit of facilitating relationships to improve healthcare practice in communities across the North, the PEER North planning committee invites healthcare providers to join this culturally relevant, evidence-based educational forum. In addition to the enriching professional sessions, attendees can look forward to engaging in a range of social and land-based cultural activities.

Pre-Conference Workshops

Wilderness Medicine

Limited to 16 participants

This largely outdoor workshop will provide participants with a chance to learn skills relevant to managing medical emergencies in remote and austere environments. Scenarios will will incorporate problem solving and an opportunity to practice practical survival skills and techniques in a realistic environment. Learning will be supported by experienced physicians and wilderness medicine providers. Emphasis will be placed on the principles of situational awareness, communication, and risk assessment.

Evidence Based Medicine

Limited to 20 participants

This workshop was designed by the PEER team specifically with primary care in mind. Participants will receive: foundational concepts for practicing EBM in a clinical setting, a solid understanding of randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and access to reliable sources of evidence that may be utilized amid a busy clinical practice. By the end of this workshop, you will have increased confidence to apply EBM concepts to your practice including using evidence in shared decision making with patients.

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) & Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

BLS recertification available. Hosted by Advanced Medical Solutions

On the Land Teachings with Indigenous Leaders

Friday morning, Somba K’e Park

Learn first hand from Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers about traditional life on the land in the North. 
Time spent in nature with Dene and Inuit are times to be remembered when communicating with Indigenous patients who comprise fifty percent of the NWT population. 

BBQ & Boats Friday Night Social

Campfire Music

Steve and Dawn Lacey

Come and sit by the fire to listen to the enchanting music from Steve and Dawn Lacey. Music has been an everyday part of life for the Lacey’s and now they will make it a part of the PEER North social event. Sit and sing along with their casual acoustic music throughout the evening.

Voyager Canoe Tours

NARWAL Northern Adventures

Be transported back in time during this amazing tour of Yellowknife Bay led by skilled pilots in a magnificent 29-foot Voyager canoe. These boats hold up to 24 people and will provide a stable outdoor adventure for our guests with minimal paddling skills.

Live Art Painting

Jen Walden and Aidan Cartwright

Renowned local artist, mother, and feature filmmaker (Elijah and the Rock Creature) and a friend will co-paint a canvas to life right before your very eyes! Open your wallets because this live art piece will go home with the highest bidder! Proceeds will go to a local charity.
